Ozarks Weekend: Dam-Quarry Campground & a Hike to Glory Hole Falls

In October 2021, our family discovered a little slice of peace in the Ozarks — Dam-Quarry Campground in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Tucked right below the Norfork Dam and next to the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, it’s the kind of place where life slows down in the best way.

This Corp of Engineers campground had everything we needed without any fuss — just the basics, shady campsites, easy river access, and a playground that kept the kids happy for hours. Mornings were slow and peaceful, with just the sound of water moving through the dam.

It’s not a resort-style campground, and that’s exactly what we loved about it. Dam-Quarry is simple, scenic, and feels worlds away from the rush of everyday life — yet it’s close enough to Mountain Home for a grocery run or a quick bite out.

While we were in the Ozarks, we took a day trip to hike Glory Hole Falls in the Ozark National Forest. The trail is just under two miles round-trip and winds through the woods before dropping down to one of the most unique waterfalls in Arkansas. Instead of spilling over a cliff, the water flows right through a perfectly round hole in the rock above, creating a hidden cascade into the pool below.

Along the way, we explored rocky bluffs, crossed streams, and stumbled upon the remains of an old stone building — a little piece of history tucked away in the trees. It was the kind of hike that felt adventurous but still doable for the kids, and it made for some of our favorite photos from the trip.
